With the amount of speculation surrounding their wedding ever since they got engaged two years ago, one would hardly imagine that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would actually be successful in keeping their nuptials a secret. But they did – that too for almost a week! News broke out only on Thursday, after their spokesperson confirmed, that the couple had finally said ‘I do’ (phew!) at the Chateau Miraval in France on Saturday, August 23, in a private ceremony attended by family and friends. Jolie reportedly walked down the aisle with the couple’s eldest sons Maddox and Pax, while daughters Zahara and Vivienne were the flower girls. Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers. “Angelina’s wedding gown was traditional, but very Angie. It was plain white floor-length antique lace and silk. She definitely wore something that once belonged to her late mother Marcheline Bertrand,” a source was quoted as saying. The couple obtained a marriage license from a local California judge, who also conducted the ceremony in France.
Now that the wedding has finally taken place, it comes as a relief in more ways than one. No more of those weekly ‘shaadi ho gayi!’ rumours, or wedding theme talks – their kids wanted a paintball or a Disney themed wedding – and constant venue-guessing news reports (as if Jennifer Aniston’s ‘aaj karungi, kal karungi’ wedding talk hasn’t pissed us off already). The Brangelina romance has given enough fodder to gossip mongers since 2005, and it only gained momentum when they got engaged in 2012. So much so, that Thursday’s news even prompted tweets in the vein of, ‘They weren’t married this whole time?’ from fans. For the longest time, Jolie had said in multiple interviews that they were ‘waiting for the right time’. “We’re just waiting for it to be the right time with the kids, with work, when it feels right. We talk about it occasionally, and the kids talk about it with us,” she’d told a mag in May, and said to another that nothing had been organized yet and she hadn’t bought a dress. But simple statements like these do not kill rumours, do they?
The superstar couple had said that they wouldn’t tie the knot until gay marriage was legalized, and so when the gay rights bill (Marriage Equality Act) was passed by the New York State Senate in 2011, it promptly led to wedding rumours for the two. And that was even before they got officially engaged.
Back in November 2012, Pitt had said, “The time is nigh. It’s soon. I got a good feeling about it” – and the Pitt-Jolie nuptial rumours got all the boost they needed to go into overdrive – from possible venues, prenups to guest lists and the lucky designer who would get to dress Jolie for D-day.
Multiple tabloids had said last year that the two would finally tie the knot by fall 2013, with one claiming that they would get married on a boat, or sail to a secluded bay off the Orkney or Shetland Islands and have the ceremony there.
A gold band Jolie was spotted wearing on her ring finger – once in March last year on a humanitarian trip to Africa, and another time while holidaying in Sydney in October – became the reason for ‘have they tied the knot already?’ rumours.
And then there were the ‘they are getting matching tattoos for their wedding?’ rumours, which surfaced this March.
of course this was an event on twitter too
